The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
