The renowned publisher has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the forthcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Transition Comes After Poor Reception
Brinkman assumes the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's lackluster unveiling last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated team members about this decision through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had indicated the requirement for a distinct game identity.
Ismailer expressed that the developers is now overhauling the project with a revised approach, aiming to better meet gamer demands.
A Pattern of Key Acquisitions
The news mirrors a comparable action taken by 2K Games in August, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock development group.
Below is the complete message from Ismailer's communication:
Team—
I know you all just wrapped up your meeting - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the positive developments. Last time I sent you all a update, I stated the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative developers we have had the chance to work with - and we’re eager for that partnership to persist.”
With your dedication and flexibility, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The player input from last autumn’s the game demo was enlightening. It confirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had improvements to make. It revealed the necessity for a clearer identity.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the criticism to mind and revamped Project ETHOS with a revitalized direction - one that’s positioned to achieve its promise to our audience.
Our confidence in this project increases every day. To boost the remarkable progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Director of 31st Union. Following several months of conversations, Ben comes aboard us on next week.
His leadership and background in the PVP shooter genre is considerable, having spent the recent years developing and overseeing some of the most well-known series in the industry, such as the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, the battle royale hit.
I invite you all in receiving Ben next week. We are all eager to continue witnessing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the time to come.
David
Experience of the Incoming Leader
Brinkman presently holds the position of senior developer and production lead at the renowned studio for their flagship title. Brinkman previously was employed at Treyarch and Activision in various production roles on the iconic franchise series, and, earlier in his career, had stints at other industry leaders.
Title Information and Concept
The upcoming game was announced in October 2024 together with a community playtest. At the time, the developers portrayed the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an exciting step forward on the genre."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the official summary states. "Challenge the competition with unique powers, challenges, and obstacles that change every match. Do you safely extract with your valuable rewards? Or take a risk, put it on the line, and pray your team can secure victory? The choice is in your hands."
The game has not yet received an confirmed launch window or consoles, but enthusiasts can look forward to more updates as development progresses.
