Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Players are granted the right to question particular calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can request.
Case in Point
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its events.
Other Changes
Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
